Imaging can help determine whether prostate cancer has spread (metastasized). When prostate cancer metastasizes to other areas of the body, it generally spreads to bones, lymph nodes, or soft tissue. There are several types of imaging that can help detect when prostate cancer has begun to spread beyond the prostate.
Identification of metastatic disease is important to ensure that you and your doctor choose the best treatment plan for your advanced prostate cancer. If metastases have been found anywhere outside of the prostate (bones, lymph nodes, soft tissue, etc), you may be a candidate for PROVENGE.
A number of imaging methods can be used to find metastases
Imaging type
How it works
Identifies metastases in
Bone
Lymph
Soft tissue
X-ray
To visualize cancer that has spread to the lungs or the ribs
Bone Scan
To identify cancer in the bones
Computed tomography (CT)
Uses X-rays to create detailed images. May show if lymph nodes are enlarged or if cancer has spread to the bones
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Uses radio waves and strong magnets to visualize soft tissue and bones
Positron emission tomography (PET)
Effective at identifying cancer that has spread to the bones
fluciclovine F 18 (Axumin®) injection
Used with PET, specifically for suspected prostate cancer recurrence–based elevated PSA level
Contrast agents can enhance the quality of images.
